A B2B webshop is rarely just a B2C webshop with a login added on top of it.

A B2B shop is rarely a B2C shop with a login on it.

Every customer has their own prices. Some customers may only see part of the assortment. Someone has to approve orders. Credit limits and payment terms come from the ERP. And the person who orders is often not the one who decides or pays.

We build B2B commerce on Magento 2 with Hyvä, connected to the systems those agreements already live in. This page is about what we build technically; B2B trade is about the business case behind it.

Your ERP knows the customer. The shop has to know it too.

In B2B the truth usually does not sit in the shop. Your ERP knows who the customer is, which prices you agreed, which payment terms apply, what their credit limit is, which products are available, and sometimes even which warehouse they ship from.

We do not want to maintain that information by hand a second time in Magento. The shop becomes the usable layer on top of your existing business logic.

The ERP keeps knowing what is true. The shop makes sure your customer can work with it.

Every customer their own shop

A good B2B shop looks different for every customer.

Customer-specific prices.Contract prices, tiers, discounts and exceptions from the ERP.

Customer-specific assortments. Not every customer needs to see or be able to order every product.

Their own payment terms.Invoice, prepayment, credit limits or other agreements you already have with that customer. Blocked accounts are enforced in checkout too.

Multiple users per company.A company is not a user. It has dozens of people with different roles, rights and responsibilities.

Approval flows. An employee puts an order together, a manager approves it, and finance may decide which budgets can go towards it.

Those are not exceptions we build around a normal shop. They are the starting point.

B2B customers mostly want to be done quickly

A consumer likes discovering new products. A professional buyer wants to reorder the same forty items and get on with their day. That’s why we design B2B commerce differently.

Order history. Favourites. Saved order lists. Bulk entry by article number or SKU. A previous order back into the basket. Fast search. Changing large quantities without opening twenty product pages.

A good product page is useful in B2B. Taking thirty seconds out of a recurring order is usually worth more.

Stock has to be reliable

A consumer finds it annoying when an order arrives later. For a professional customer, a wrong stock indication can mean work or production stops.

We do not only look at in stock / out of stock. Which stock is sellable? From which warehouse? What is on its way? Can an order be delivered partially? When does the rest arrive? Can a supplier ship directly?

How much of that you need differs per company. But the shop should not start guessing when another system knows the real answer.

Not every customer wants to use your shop

Some large customers do not want to log in at all. They order from their own procurement environment. That’s why B2B commerce can also mean we provide punch-out, EDI, APIs or file exchange.

The Magento shop is then not your only interface. It becomes part of a larger ordering platform that supports different ways of ordering. Integrations goes deeper into how we build those connections.

First the question: should you build this yourself?

There are good off-the-shelf B2B portals. They connect to your ERP, take over your contract prices, go live in weeks and you pay per month. That is a real offer, and it is actively sold against us: this way you do not have to build an expensive, complex custom B2B portal.

For some companies that is exactly what they need, and then they are faster and cheaper than what we can build. We would rather raise that ourselves than have you discover it after you have signed with us.

Buy an existing product when you mainly need a digital ordering portal next to your ERP, your price and order rules fit inside that product, and you want little of your own functionality. Custom B2B commerce gets more interesting once the standard starts to pinch.

When building it yourself gets more interesting

B2B and B2C have to be one whole.Magento serves different customer types, prices, catalogues and storefronts from the same commerce foundation, so you do not have to maintain two separate ecosystems.

Your pricing logic is genuinely yours.Contract prices are one thing. Complex combinations of assortments, packaging, volumes, customer groups and exceptions quickly go beyond what a standard portal expects.

Your ordering process is complex.Approvals, budgets, different roles, punch-out, quotes or unusual order flows can be the heart of the process.

You want to go further than an ordering portal.Self-service around invoices, documents, returns, deliveries, quotes or service turns your shop into a real customer platform.

The channel becomes strategic. When a large part of your customers works through the system and you invest in it for years, control over roadmap and technology weighs heavier.

If you do build, there are three routes

Magento as the base.Magento 2 has B2B in the box: customer groups, price lists, company accounts with roles and approvals, quotes, quick order by article number. If your agreements fit in that, this is the cheapest path to something you own yourself. It is also the route we take most often.

Magento plus what is missing. The pinch point is rarely the whole shop. More often it is one flow: an approval process that runs just differently, an order file a customer keeps emailing, a quote process that lives nowhere. Then we build that layer next to it as Tiny products and leave the rest standing. You get what was missing without rebuilding the shop.

Fully custom.Sometimes ordering is only one function of what you actually need, and the real system is a customer platform. Then a commerce platform is more of a straitjacket than an advantage, and we build it as Platforms.

Those last two were hard to justify for years.Custom work for one specific flow cost too many hours to earn back on the time it saved, and then “buy something standard” was the right advice. That calculation has genuinely changed: our developers use AI daily for analysis, building, testing and documenting, and together with our reusable components we cut the hours. Not free, but justifiable in places where we used to refer you on.

A B2B channel can also be yours to own

That last point matters to us. A SaaS B2B portal you rent, and that has advantages: the vendor manages the technology and you start quickly.

With Magento you take more responsibility and get more control. The code is accessible. You choose your infrastructure. You build functionality that fits your business. You can change development partner. And you are not fully tied to the roadmap or pricing structure of one vendor.

For a simple ordering portal that does not have to be decisive. But when your digital ordering environment becomes a strategic part of the relationship with your customers, it is a relevant trade-off.

Start with what works. Build what’s missing. Own what matters.

Why Magento + Hyvä

Magento already has many of the structures B2B needs in its foundation: customers, customer groups, catalogues, prices, orders, accounts and multiple storefronts. On top of that we build what is specific to your business and connect it to your ERP and other systems.

For the front end we use Hyvä. Performance weighs at least as heavily in B2B as in B2C, but for a different reason: a professional customer may use your shop every week, and every slow search, extra click or waiting page repeats itself hundreds of times a year.

Speed here is not only conversion. It is productivity. Magento and Hyvä explains why we chose that combination.

The integration is often the real project

A B2B shop can be technically perfect and still worthless if prices, stock and customers are wrong. That’s why on many B2B projects a large part of the work goes into the ERP integration.

We decide where the source of truth sits, how data synchronises, what has to be real time and what does not, and what happens when a system is temporarily unreachable.

We have experience with ERPs such as Exact, Odoo, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, Venice and Adfinity, with CRMs such as Teamleader, and with various sector-specific and home-grown systems. Integrations goes deeper into that.

AI can sit in the solution itself too

Above is what AI does to our hours. It can also become part of your B2B processes: processing orders from documents, finding products from a description, classifying large catalogues, helping customers find the right equivalent, supporting internal sales teams.

Not every problem needs AI. But especially in B2B we see processes that were too specific to automate for years and now do become economically interesting. Sometimes such a solution belongs in the shop, sometimes a Tiny products approach is far more logical.

What it costs

A B2B commerce project typically starts from around €15,000: roughly double the €7,500 a standalone shop starts at, because the ERP connection is the core of the work here.

What it becomes above that depends mainly on the ERP integration, pricing logic, account structures, catalogue, approval flows, migration and any punch-out or EDI connections. A relatively simple ordering portal is something else than an international B2B platform with different customer types and sales models.

We work at €95 an hour and invoice monthly according to progress. Hosting and third-party software you take out directly with the supplier where possible. On top of that comes the SLA, from 40 hours a year as on every Magento shop we build. Pricing gives the full picture.

How long it takes

A first usable B2B shop can take shape within a few weeks when scope and integrations are clear. Usually a B2B project sits at the top of our shop range: count on 8 to 12 weeks. More complex ERP integrations, migrations, pricing logic and approval flows take more time.

In B2B we therefore want to work early with your ERP, real customer data and real prices. That tells us far more than a long list of requirements.

After go-live

B2B commerce changes with your business. New customer groups. Different price agreements. Extra countries. New warehouses. An ERP upgrade. A large customer asking for punch-out.

We combine technical maintenance through an SLA, from 40 hours a year, with further development when it is needed. We keep maintaining Magento, Hyvä, PHP and modules; new functionality we build in sprints when there is a business case for it.

Questions we get a lot

Can every customer see their own contract prices? Yes. We pull those from the ERP where possible so nobody has to maintain prices in two places.

Can different people from the same customer have an account? Yes. We set up company accounts with multiple users, roles, rights and, where needed, approval flows.

Can customers reorder quickly? Yes. Order history, order lists, favourites, bulk entry and repeating previous orders are typical B2B features.

Do you support punch-out and EDI? Yes, when the systems on the other side support it. For large customers, ordering from their own procurement environment can matter more than the shop itself.

Can the shop take credit limits and payment terms into account? Yes. We preferably pull that information from the ERP and use it during the ordering process, blocked accounts included.

Why don’t we just buy an existing B2B portal? Sometimes you should. A standard product is often better when you mainly need online ordering and contract prices. Custom gets more interesting when your processes, integrations or customer experience become specific or strategic. And it is not all or nothing: we build on Magento, we fill Magento with a tiny product where it pinches, or we build a platform. Those three routes are above.

Why Magento for B2B? Because Magento combines strong commerce foundations with the freedom to build your own price, account and order processes and to integrate deeply with other systems.

What does a B2B shop cost? Typically from around €15,000, roughly double a standalone shop. ERP integration, pricing logic, account structures and specific order processes determine how far the project goes above that. Pricing

How do we justify the investment? Do not only look at extra online revenue. Fewer orders by mail and phone, less manual entry, fewer errors and less time per order usually weigh just as heavily. B2B trade goes deeper into that business case.

Read next

IntegrationsReal stock, real prices and real customers in your webshop.

B2B tradeWholesalers, distributors and manufacturers selling to businesses.

Akeneo and PIMOne place for your product data, and from there into shop and catalogues.

Customer-specific prices, tiers, credit limits and ordering by article number.
